This Is Unacceptable

13 04 2010

I’ve been avoiding watching this but I finally had to do it.

Fuck me.

In watching the video I recognized that it was priming for a response so I was actively resisting that particular emotion and trying to be more analytical in the viewing.  What bothered me more was the heightened emotion and eagerness of the sighting gunner to “see” weapons that were not there and to “see” threatening behavior where none was at all visible in the video.

What I heard in his voice was a kid stressed out, a kid upset that his buddies had been killed recently by insurgents.  I heard a kid frustrated at his inability to target the people actively and effectively inflicting casualties on his team from a distance or by remotely detonated IEDs.  I heard a kid who wanted revenge but rarely had a good target to exact that revenge upon.  He wanted to believe he was seeing the ever elusive insurgents out in the open, insurgents all with guns and RPGs, insurgents clearly acting in threatening ways.  He wanted to believe he finally had clear insurgents wandering through his gun sights so he could finally deliver the retribution they so richly deserved.

He absolutely saw what he wanted to see.

You could especially hear his emotions boiling over when he had to wait for the go ahead to fire on the van…he was desperate to shoot at a van picking up the wounded because they must be bad guys too because they’re trying to help the insurgents he just killed.  A whole van load of even more insurgents to shoot!  Please, LET ME SHOOT THEM TOO!!!

Yet I don’t blame the solider, I blame the situation and the leadership that continues to let this scenario play out over and over and over again.  We have the biggest and most powerful military the planet has ever seen.  Our enemies know this and simply avoid giving us a target to shoot at.  In the inevitable frustration that follows our children eventually lash out and shoot at whatever is there…killing the innocent…and making even more hidden enemies.  It’s a vicious cycle that our politicians do not recognize or largely ignore because they can’t be seen as “soft” on “terrorists”.

It’s a vicious cycle we are singularly well equipped to only make worse if we don’t stop.

Please join me and send WikiLeaks a few buck to help out.  The media isn’t uncovering this and you know for damn sure our government isn’t going to tell us.

Not All Wars Are Just, Some Are Just Wars

Dennis makes too much sense to get any air time or attention from the media.  Here’s my small attempt to remedy that.

Here’s To Humanity Being Lucky (So Far)

28 07 2008

Given this administration’s sense of religious destiny and apparent desire to bring about the end of days combined with their collective of lack of intellectual rigor, arbitrary declarations of war, and penchant for unjustified violence I’m rather astonished we’re even here to contemplate the folly of nuclear war. Let’s hope Bush, Cheney and their henchmen can keep their itchy trigger fingers off the big red button just a little while longer.

I can’t adequately express how glad I’ll be to see these people gone.

4,000 U.S. Soliders Dead

23 03 2008

The U.S. military said four American soldiers were killed by a bomb in Baghdad, raising The Associated Press’s count of the U.S. death toll in the war to at least 4,000.

And  Dick Cheney says…”So?”

When does this all start to make sense?  The needless deaths?  The squandered trust?  The reputation ruined?

When does this administration start to admit mistakes?  Confess their lies?  Admit defeat?  Hang their heads in shame?

How can we make this right?  Fix Iraq? Restore the peace?  Act with pure intentions again?

When do we get to lick our own wounds?  Mend our broken soldiers? Restore our Constitution?  Bring some honor back to being an American again?

Who can bring the resurrection of our integrity?  The diplomacy abandoned?  The international conventions disregarded?  The rights shattered?

Their incessant lies and deceptions have only left behind questions.  No ethics.  No answers.  All without and for no reason.

The Saddam and Al Qaeda Connection Uncovered! Bush Vindicated!

11 03 2008

As you may recall, there were a few (and by a few I mean 935) statements made by the Bush administration leading up to the invasion of Iraq that claimed Saddam was helping Al Qaeda get Weapons of Mass Destruction. Of course after months years weapons inspectors found none. Yeah, none. Shocker.

The 22% of stalwart Bush supporters, or as I like to call them The Fighting Faithful, would always remind us that Saddam must have moved the weapons to another country, or buried them, or ate them with nacho cheese on top, whatever. Really one answer was no more nonsensical than the other…but their main point was that Saddam was helping Al Qaeda, followed by Look over there, Terrorists! Run!!

Now after five years a Pentagon-sponsored study addresses that nagging mongered fear:

An exhaustive review of more than 600,000 Iraqi documents that were captured after the 2003 U.S. invasion has found no evidence that Saddam Hussein’s regime had any operational links with Osama bin Laden’s al Qaida terrorist network. The Pentagon-sponsored study, scheduled for release later this week, did confirm that Saddam’s regime provided some support to other terrorist groups, particularly in the Middle East, U.S. … However, his security services were directed primarily against Iraqi exiles, Shiite Muslims, Kurds and others he considered enemies of his regime.

The new study of the Iraqi regime’s archives found no documents indicating a “direct operational link” between Hussein’s Iraq and al Qaida before the invasion, according to a U.S. official familiar with the report.

Oops. While I’m certain the Bush administration won’t admit to lying I’m sure they will be issuing an apology later today to beg forgiveness for their utter incompetence and hubris in leading us into this unnecessary war. And for the thousands of needlessly dead American soldiers. And the hundreds of thousands of needlessly killed Iraqis. Oh, and the trillions of dollars wasted. And for all the winged monkeys singing “God Bless America” that keep flying out of my ass.
