As you may recall, there were a few (and by a few I mean 935) statements made by the Bush administration leading up to the invasion of Iraq that claimed Saddam was helping Al Qaeda get Weapons of Mass Destruction. Of course after
months years weapons inspectors found none. Yeah, none. Shocker.
The 22% of stalwart Bush supporters, or as I like to call them The Fighting Faithful, would always remind us that Saddam must have moved the weapons to another country, or buried them, or ate them with nacho cheese on top, whatever. Really one answer was no more nonsensical than the other…but their main point was that Saddam was helping Al Qaeda, followed by Look over there, Terrorists! Run!!
Now after five years a Pentagon-sponsored study addresses that nagging mongered fear:
An exhaustive review of more than 600,000 Iraqi documents that were captured after the 2003 U.S. invasion has found no evidence that Saddam Hussein’s regime had any operational links with Osama bin Laden’s al Qaida terrorist network. The Pentagon-sponsored study, scheduled for release later this week, did confirm that Saddam’s regime provided some support to other terrorist groups, particularly in the Middle East, U.S. … However, his security services were directed primarily against Iraqi exiles, Shiite Muslims, Kurds and others he considered enemies of his regime.
The new study of the Iraqi regime’s archives found no documents indicating a “direct operational link” between Hussein’s Iraq and al Qaida before the invasion, according to a U.S. official familiar with the report.
Oops. While I’m certain the Bush administration won’t admit to lying I’m sure they will be issuing an apology later today to beg forgiveness for their utter incompetence and hubris in leading us into this unnecessary war. And for the thousands of needlessly dead American soldiers. And the hundreds of thousands of needlessly killed Iraqis. Oh, and the trillions of dollars wasted. And for all the winged monkeys singing “God Bless America” that keep flying out of my ass.
