Remind me again why it is that marriage only needs protecting from the gays around election season? Oh that’s right, it’s because Republicans have no positive accomplishments to point to so they once again drag out the old dead horse that is the gay marriage ban to get the conservative bigot vote out to the polls. Like clockwork, but much more cynical…and more gay.
Most of the ten sponsors are pretty predictable but there are two Senators that ooze especially pungent hypocrisy for sponsoring such an amendment: Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and Larry Craig (R-Idaho).
Jesus’ General made some fantastic ads to help the Republicans promote the effort.
Evangelically yours (in a completely heterosexual way),
I stumbled across some right wing douche bag wringing his hands about how it could be that committed Christians would possibly support a liberal Democrat. The short answer is “George Bush”, but that really wouldn’t have persuaded this 26 percenter. He then went on to list the usual talking (or whining) points about gays, abortion, welfare, needle programs, secularization of society, etc. It really was uninspiring prattle but I couldn’t help but take a swing at such a slow hanging curve ball. I replied:
Many committed Christians can support a liberal democrat because it’s liberals and not right who are compassionate to the homeless, the elderly, the infirm and the poor through programs like welfare (which you pan later in your comment).
It’s because the right is dogmatic, intolerant, and very often hypocritical when it comes to issues of sex but liberals instead endorse and promote treating people with respect and dignity by recognizing that sexual preference is not a choice but a biological disposition.
It’s also because liberals do not promote failed programs like abstinence only but instead want to provide real sexual education that works so that the legally protected doctor/patient decision about abortion is as rare as possible.
As for needles, we would all prefer that people did not abuse drugs but pretending it isn’t a difficult and persistent problem won’t fix it. Drug abusers will continue to abuse drugs with or without clean needles, so if inexpensive programs that provide clean needles will lower the instances of extremely expensive diseases and will also bring addicts in contact with information about help to get off of drugs then I believe that is money well spent.
As for purging faith and religion from public life, you’re mistaken. Liberals only wish to make this country safe for all religious perspectives. Christians may be the majority today but even if they were not liberals would adamantly protect your right to practice it while making sure no other religion is given preferential treatment by the government…just like the founding fathers intended it.
Republicans and the right like to complain about taxes but are often the first to ironically spout jingoistic comments like “Freedom isn’t FREE!!!” Indeed, it is not, but apparently only some of us are willing to step up and make sacrifices for the greater good. Just like Jesus would .
Who knows, maybe one or two of those points will make sense to him. I doubt it, but just maybe.
Even though the data is from May 2007 it is still disturbing data for the non-superstitious reality based demographic. I doubt it has gotten much better in the past twelve months.
I had done some research used to think that the separation of church and state was not only intentional but one of the better attributes of this country. Heck, I even wrote a blog post on the topic. Alas, John McCain tells me that that isn’t so. Damn, I just can’t argue with John on this point.
I’m not saying he’s old enough to have been there at the birth of the nation. Of course not, that would be a silly thing to say. No, he’s old enough to have been there pouring beers when Democracy got Liberty all drunk at that party where he then invited his friends State, Freedom and Religion over to have the free for all orgy…which of course then resulted in the birth of this bastard nation a few months later.
He also remembers that the phrase “separation of Church and State” arose after Church proved to be an especially angry drunk and started getting a little too “preachy” for State. Democracy eventually had to separate them after Church “accidentally” spilled her beer on State. It was a little bit of a scene.
It’s also worth noting that John was there at the naming ceremony of this great nation and he remembers that the original name was supposed to be “The Jesus Christ Incorporated States For Wayward Religious Zealots And Stupid Fucking Neocons”, but then it was decided at the last minute that “United States of America” had a better ring to it. (Good call there)
This might turn into a new series of questions and maybe the faithful out there will bring some answers to the table. To begin this series then I didn’t want to throw out some recent or obscure scientific question that nobody has researched. No, to be fair I thought I’d give them an easy question that’s been around for a while. Something they should have had time to work out by now.
Today I ask the faithful the question, why is there evil in the world? Of course the Greek philosopher Epicurus asked this question over two thousand years ago:
“If God is willing to prevent evil, but not able…then He is impotent.
If He is able, but not willing…then He is malevolent.
If He is both able and willing…then whence cometh evil?”
Two thousand years is a long time and yet I have yet to hear a good answer to such a basic question. I do hope someone out there can clear this up for me once and for all.

There has been a long standing debate about Einstein’s views on Religion. The devout will rightly point to quotes from Einstein saying “Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind” or even his dismissal of the randomness of Quantum theory stating “He [God] does not throw dice”. To the less theistic these quotes always seemed to be flamboyantly hollow rhetorical devices used by the great thinker.
Now there is proof that our suspicions were correct.
The philosopher Eric Gutkind sent Einstein a copy of his new book Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt. Einstein sat down and on January 3 1954 penned a reply stating:
“The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”
…
“For me the Jewish religion like all others is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything ‘chosen’ about them.”
Perhaps science isn’t so lame without religion after all.
The handwritten letter will go on sale at Bloomsbury Auctions in London later this week and is expected to fetch up to $16,000.
Christ, according to the faith, is the second person in the Trinity, the Father being the first and the Holy Ghost the third. Each of these persons is God. Christ is his own father and his own son. The Holy Ghost is neither father nor son, but both. The son was begotten by the father, but existed before he was begotten–just the same before as after. . . .
So, it is declared that the Father is God, and the Son God, and the Holy Ghost God, and that these three Gods make one God.
According to the celestial multiplication table, once one is three, and three times one is one, and according to heavenly subtraction, if we take two from three, three are left. The addition is equally peculiar, if we add two to one, we have but one. . . .
Nothing ever was, nothing ever can be more perfectly idiotic and absurd than the dogma of the Trinity.
– Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1899), “The Trinity” (from “The Foundations of Faith,” The Works of Ingersoll).
No wonder Christians believe in intelligent design, if you can be convinced that this absurd idea is true then ID will sound absolutely inspired.
Your generous offerings here are appreciated WAY more by me than by any lame church. I will even answer all your prayers so long as your prayers are satisfied by an email and a mental image of me enjoying a pizza. Thanks!
